Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race 29th of March
The Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race started March 12th 1829, the idea came from two friends, Charles Merivale (cambridge university student) sent Charles Wordsworth (oxford university student) the first challenge of a boat race and thus the tradition was born which has continued to the present day. Every year its tradional for the winner of the previous years race to be challenged by the loser to a re-match, the race has been held annually since 1856, Cambridge currently lead by 79-73, both teams are known as the blues, Cambridge with the light blue boat & Oxford with the dark blue boat, the four & a quarter mile race from Putney to Mortlake has become a major sporting occasion & is witnessed each year by up to 250,000 spectators & millions of televison viewers around the world.
